The chutney sandwich, also known as a Bombay sandwich, is a popular street food originating from Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India. It has emerged as a quick, affordable street food in Mumbai, catering to office-goers, students, and commuters who needed a portable yet filling breakfast or snack.
This dish is very nostalgic to me! This Bombay special dish I first tried in a road-side shop in Bengaluru during my early marital days.
It was so addictive that we started having it every week and gradually, I started making it at home.

Ingredients
Bread: I have used white sandwich bread for this recipe. You can use whole wheat or multi grain bread too.
Vegetables: As it is a street food, use easily available vegetables. I have used cucumber, onion, tomato and capsicum.
Chutney: The key ingredient of this recipe is green chutney which is usually prepared with blending coriander and mint leaves along with other spices. You can also use either coriander or mint chutney.
I will share the chutney recipe in my blog later. Nowadays, green chutney is readily available in the supermarket, you can purchase that as well.
Ketchup: I use hot and sweet flavor of tomato ketchup.
Others: Butter, Black Salt, Mixture, etc.
Green Chutney Sandwich Recipe
Learn to make the green chutney sandwich by following the instructions below.
Take each slice of bread and spread green chutney and tomato ketchup on one side.
Now, add finely sliced veggies to the bread. Sprinkle a little black salt. You can also add black pepper powder and chaat masala powder on it.
Finally, top with another slice of bread, keeping the chutney and ketchup-applied side inside.
Meanwhile, heat a nonstick skillet or grill pan.
Apply butter to both sides of the sandwich and toast in a hot skillet until golden brown.
If you have a stove top sandwich press, then use that to get the exact smoky flavor in the sandwich just like the road-side stalls.
Now that the sandwich is complete, cut it into a triangle form, top with sev or mixture, and serve.
Variations
You may create variants by adding different types of chutneys, and each will provide a unique flavor.
Adding cheese to this sandwich is a fantastic idea for a variety.
You can also add yellow, red and orange bell pepper as stuffing.
Storage
I would not recommend storage of this sandwich as it will turn soggy and tasteless. Always prepare fresh and serve immediately.
Top tips
- You can remove the crust of the bread to make a soft sandwich.
- Avoid adding excess chutney or ketchup, it will make the sandwich soggy.
- To give a flavor variation, add pomegranate arils.
