Ingredients

Chickpeas: The key ingredient of this recipe is chickpea or Kabuli chana.

Vegetables: I have used cucumber, onion, tomato and coriander leaves in this salad. I prefer to use English cucumber over regular cucumber. You can also use cherry tomatoes instead of regular tomatoes. If you enjoy salad, try adding a few mint leaves to make it more refreshing.

Others: Apart from the above ingredients, I have used black salt, chaat masala powder, crushed black pepper and lemon juice.

Instructions

It takes time to prepare Indian chickpea salad from scratch. Wash and soak the dried chickpeas overnight and later drain the water, pressure cook them for at least 4-5 whistles or until tender.

Later allow to release the pressure and drain the water. Now cool the chickpeas before using them in salad.

In a large mixing bowl, combine boiled chickpeas, chopped cucumber, onions, tomatoes, and coriander leaves. Season with salt and ground black pepper and fresh lime juice. Sprinkle little bit of chaat masala powder on top. Toss everything together well and serve right away.

Variations

As this salad is inspired by Indian cuisine, the salad dressing is simple lemon juice and seasoned with salt and pepper. However, you can also add olive oil with lemon juice.

Interestingly, if you like your salad to be a little spicy, you may add chopped green chilli.

Make Ahead & Storage

Instead of making Indian Chickpea Salad from scratch, you can boil chickpeas ahead of time in a large batch and then store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

You can quickly prepare this salad whenever you want it by taking the boiled chickpeas out of the refrigerator, combining them with the other ingredients, add lemon juice, seasonings and serve immediately.

This salad is best eaten fresh, but leftover chickpea salad can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.

Top tips

  • Always use fresh vegetables for salad.
  • If you are making chana salad from scratch do not forget to soak dried chickpea overnight.

FAQ

Can I make the salad with canned chickpeas?

Canned chickpeas are precooked and ready to serve. If you use canned chickpeas, then you can make this salad quickly. Rinse canned chickpeas with water before using them in your salad. Rinsing helps to cut the salt content of the chickpeas. Be careful when adding salt to your salad if you're using canned chickpeas.
